Product Description

This D-18E features two Dualmond pickups and was produced for just two years, with a total of 302 units (one in 1958 and 301 in 1959).

Its innovative and striking looks were completely unpopular with the market at the time of its release, resulting in a very short-lived model.

The most famous musician to use this guitar is probably Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.

This D-18E was the only guitar played on "MTV Unplugged in New York," recorded in 1993 and considered one of the greatest live albums of all time.

In 2020, it sold for the highest price ever paid for a guitar (approximately $6.01 million).

It is in very good condition, showing some weather-related wear but no visible cracks.

The last three digits of the serial number have been obscured, but the first two digits are the same as those of the D-18E owned by Kurt Cobain.

The differences between this guitar and the standard D-18 are as follows:
The bracing has been changed to ladder bracing, two Dual Monde pickups have been installed, and a pickup selector and control knobs have been added.

The natural sound is more subdued than that of the standard D-18, but compared to its rival at the time, the Gibson J-160E, it features the rich acoustic overtones that are characteristic of Martin guitars.

The fingerboard was previously repaired by one of Japan's leading repairmen, and the frets, nut, and saddle have been replaced. The work is extremely meticulous, and the finish on the nut in particular is artistic.

A piezo pickup is installed under the saddle, and one of the control knobs has been changed to a piezo volume, while the other two are the master volume and master tone for the magnetic pickup. The pickup selector is now compatible with magnetic pickups only.

The original assembly is included, so it can be restored to its original condition.

The tuning machines have also been replaced with newer Kluson models, but the originals are included.

The neck is straight, and the string height is adjusted to approximately 2.2mm on the 6th string side and 1.7mm on the 1st string side at the 12th fret, ensuring comfortable playability.

Even when played acoustically, it has a jazz guitar-like sound, but the sweet tone of the Dual Monde pickups is exceptional when plugged in.
