Marcelino López Nieto began his career as a high-end furniture craftsman. While guitar making started as a hobby, he eventually studied under D. Fortia. Inspired by legendary instruments owned by Fortia—such as those by Torres and Santos Hernández—he decided to pursue a life as a luthier.

He made his professional debut as a guitar maker in 1949, and with invaluable advice from the widow of Santos Hernández, he quickly established himself as a first-rate craftsman.

It is also well known that in the early 1970s, he was commissioned to produce several instruments on behalf of H.Y. Aguado.

[Description]
This is a rare and valuable guitar handcrafted by Marcelino López, created with great interest and passion as a replica of an instrument by Julián Llorente, which López personally owns.

Julián Llorente was born in 1827 in the small village of Alcorcón de Pozuelo near Madrid. By 1851, he began building guitars in a Madrid workshop. He laid the foundation for the Madrid school of guitar making, which would later influence great makers such as Vicente Arias and Manuel Ramírez. His contributions are widely recognized—not only by López, but also by Ramírez and Romanillos.

This guitar features a smaller body typical of 19th-century instruments and uses traditional wooden pegs. It produces a refined and sweet tone, with great attention to tonal color—something increasingly demanded alongside the rise of ethnomusicological performance practices.

The instrument is beautifully finished, with a vibrant and expressive sound. It retains its original shellac varnish and is in excellent condition, with only minor signs of wear.
