Born in 1941 in Itako, Ibaraki Prefecture, Katsumi Arai studied guitar performance under Yukihiro Yokoo. Through Yokoo's introduction, he began studying classical guitar making under Tsunesaburo Kurosawa in 1962. In 1964, he continued his studies under Morio Tasaki. Arai established his own workshop in 1968 in Toda, Saitama Prefecture, and later relocated to Kazo, where he continues to build guitars today.
