A 1978 Gibson "ES-335TD Non Tap Switch" has arrived in stock
Starting in late 1975, Gibson began switching the neck material from mahogany to maple for many of its iconic models
This change is believed to have been primarily intended to increase the neck’s strength and reduce problems.
It also appears to have been influenced by the ease of sourcing wood in North America to meet the high demand of the 1970s.
The guitar we’ve just received is a 1978 “ES-335TD”!
Although models from this period onward began to feature a coil-tap switch on the horn near the first string, this particular instrument does not have one.
Externally, while there are some minor scratches typical of its age, it remains in excellent condition for a vintage instrument that’s been in production for nearly 50 years!
While many guitars from this era show wear on the back of the neck, this one has retained its beautiful finish.
As for the specifications, it’s equipped with the original “Engraved Numbered PAF” pickups—a design that has been in use since 1969, featuring T-relief bobbins and a backplate engraved with the patent number.
Additionally, while the tailpiece has been modified from the original trapeze type to a stop tailpiece, all other parts are original.
While models from the 1950s and, of course, the 1960s command very high prices, 1970s models equipped with similar pickups are still reasonably priced due to their higher production volume, so we highly recommend those in good condition!
