We’ve just received a Hofner “182 E2” from the 1960s
This is the “182 E2,” a solid-body Hofner bass model believed to have been produced around 1965
This is the “E2” model featuring dual pickups
Positioned as the solid-body counterpart to the familiar “500/1,” this model debuted in the early 1960s.
It features a maple neck, a rosewood fingerboard, a bolt-on joint, and a short scale
The unit we’ve just received is equipped with the “Staple” pickups used through the early ’60s; based on the pot date, it is believed to have been manufactured in ’65.
After this, changes were gradually made, and the pickups were eventually replaced with “Shark Fin” pickups
Externally, while it shows some wear typical of its age, it’s in excellent condition for vintage gear!
Internally, one of the control knobs has been replaced with a recent reproduction, along with several screws and other small parts.
Since it features the same pickups and controls as the 500/1, it carries on the traditional “Hofner” sound; however, the crisp clarity of the solid-body design makes it particularly well-suited for round-wound strings.
This is a model that’s surprisingly hard to find even on the vintage market!
