A 1980 Zemaitis Wood Front Custom has arrived

An original UK-made “Wood Front Custom” model, handcrafted by Tony Zemaitis
This particular model was crafted between the late 1970s and around 1980. The compact body features a single cutaway and is constructed from a three-piece Honduran mahogany body and back, with the neck made from The body top is made of flame maple, and the center section features a design with a rosewood and mahogany inlay
Additionally, in a very rare twist, the owner apparently requested the guitar be built as a fretless instrument at the time of the order; consequently, the bridge and tailpiece were designed for practical fretless use, featuring a standard Tun-O-Matic bridge and a stop tailpiece.
Later, the owner asked Tony to convert it to a fretted guitar; at the same time, the tailpiece was replaced with an aluminum block, and the bridge to a custom deluxe-spec machined aluminum unit; at the same time, the pickup rings were refurbished from plastic to machined aluminum. The tailpiece, the headstock emblem, and the truss rod cover
feature engravings by Tony’s close friend, Danny O’Brien.
As for the exterior, the finish features a fabric-stained effect applied by Tony himself, resulting in a rich, antique-like finish. While there are a few minor scratches here and there, considering its age, it’s in excellent condition!
As mentioned above, this Zemaitis guitar has undergone the refurbishment that was standard practice at the time, so while some parts have been replaced since it was new, all modifications were made by Tony himself, so I believe it can still be considered an original.
Additionally, it is equipped with what appears to be a DiMarzio PAF pickup, and the pots are CTS units dated 1976, so
we believe it was either built or refurbished sometime between the late 1970s and around 1980.
The sound—a combination of a mahogany body and humbucker pickups—delivers a thick, wild tone. While it has a simpler design compared to fancier models like the Metal Front or Pearl Front, we’re offering this
Wood Front model with superior sound at a fair price!
