A relatively recent 2018 D-35 has arrived. 2018 was a milestone year for Martin's Standard Series, when the bracing pattern was changed to forward-shifted - and this instrument was built right at that transition.
In that 2018 update, the D-28 leaned heavily into a vintage look with open-back tuners and herringbone binding. The D-35, meanwhile, retained multi-stripe purfling and Grover Rotomatic tuners, respecting the tradition and identity the D-35 has carried since its debut in 1965. The tortoise-pattern pickguard is another notable visual touch, adding a classic, elegant accent.
Tonally, the D-35's signature charm is fully on display: a well-grounded low end and a clean, airy top end that never gets muddy, now combined with the powerful projection and rich resonance of the forward-shifted bracing. The cohesiveness typical of the 3-piece back gains extra power, making for a genuinely satisfying instrument whether strumming or fingerpicking - a guitar that pursues both tradition and a modern voice at a high level.
