Gibson 1940 SJ-100

The Phantom Super Jumbo

For collectors and players chasing the depths of vintage acoustic guitars: you may have encountered the well-known "J-45" or the pinnacle "SJ-200," but have you ever actually seen - or heard - a genuinely "phantom" model?

Original pre-war Gibsons are disappearing from the market year by year, and prices keep climbing. Among them, the SJ-100 (Super Jumbo 100), produced only briefly between 1939 and 1943, is so scarce in the vintage market it's sometimes called "an urban legend in itself."

This 1940 Gibson SJ-100 is a genuinely miraculous original vintage example. Born as a more affordable sibling to the SJ-200, its unique spec has since become a value all its own - a piece of playable history.

Debuting in 1939 as a sibling to the flagship SJ-200, the SJ-100 used mahogany sides and back rather than the SJ-200's maple, with restrained ornamentation for a sober, rugged look. This example carries especially iconic early-period details: a stair-step headstock and a striking mustache bridge - both changed to a standard headstock shape and simpler bridge the following year in 1941, making this early spec extremely rare. Production ended not long after due to wartime material shortages.

The combination of a huge 17-inch super jumbo body and superb pre-war mahogany produces an overwhelming tone: where the maple-bodied SJ-200 is bright and crystalline, this instrument delivers the opposite - a warm mahogany character fused with a massive, room-filling roar.
