"YAMAHA 1977 L-53
In 1974 Yamaha introduced its upscale 'L series,' beginning with the L-31, a luxury evolution of the FG-2000, which in turn led to the 1975 Custom series. The 'L' stands for 'Luxury,' and within Yamaha's FG/N/L lineup at the time, the L series represented the top grade.
The four L-series models introduced from 1975 earned the grand nickname of the 'Four Heavenly Kings,' each with a distinctive, eye-catching design. This listing is one of those four: the L-53 Custom.
The headstock, generously inlaid with abalone, radiates even more luxury than its L-series siblings, with the dark grain of Brazilian rosewood peeking through at its center for a striking, alluring look.
This early-production example has a 3-piece back of Brazilian rosewood and ebony, a hallmark of the front-run models. The tone lives up to a flagship instrument: generous volume, sensuous low end, and delicately shimmering highs that never overpower.
What stands out most is its sustain - end a chord and the resonance carries through the entire body without losing definition, ringing out richly from the soundhole like a grand piano's sustain pedal still held down, inviting you to simply savor the decay. Even a light touch reveals its charm, making this an elegant instrument that flatters its owner with the simplest of phrases.
