The Builder's Edition 517, created by Taylor's Master Guitar Designer Andy Powers.
Taylor's reputation has long been built on a bright, articulate, modern top end. This model turns that expectation on its head — the moment you strike a string, what fills the room is a surprisingly full, warm, richly aged tone.
The secret lies in the Grand Pacific body shape, a modern reinterpretation of the classic round-shoulder dreadnought. Every low note comes through clean, wrapped in the kind of deep resonance today's players have been asking for.
That depth is backed up by careful wood selection. The torrefied Sitka spruce top has been heat-treated to mimic the dried-out, played-in state of a guitar decades old — a brand-new top that already sounds like it's lived half a century.
Paired with solid tropical mahogany back and sides, the midrange carries pleasant woody warmth and body, giving strummed chords a tone that's earthy and refined at once, while fingerstyle playing comes through with a gentle, intimate whisper note by note.
Pitch stays true even in the upper positions — a common weak point on many acoustics — with accurate intonation and sustain that rings out beautifully wherever you play.
The value here isn't only sonic. From the moment you pick it up, this guitar feels like an old friend. The compound-curve neck transitions smoothly from the lower positions into the upper register, making the move from chord work to lead lines remarkably fluid. Eased edges on the body and fingerboard let the guitar sit against your body with none of the usual sharp corners.
The ultra-thin Silent Satin finish minimizes clothing noise, so whether you're playing quietly at night or in front of a studio mic, only the pure tone of the guitar comes through.
An L.R. Baggs M1 Active pickup system is installed, giving natural, plug-and-play output for a guitar that's ready for anything.
For players who love traditional acoustic design but don't want to compromise on modern playability, this is a special one to own.
