Headway / 1981 HF-415
A "Showa-era Headway" 000-28 type.
Headway was founded in 1977 in Matsumoto, Nagano, gathering master luthiers including Yasuo Momose, known for his guitar-building work at Hayashi Woodworks. Acoustic guitar production paused around 1983 following a factory fire. The brand later revived in the 2000s, but the instruments built from 1977 through the early '80s - now known among enthusiasts as "Showa-era Headway" - are highly prized and rare.
This is the HF-415 from the 400 series (000-28) lineup of late 1980, built entirely from solid woods: spruce top with rosewood back and sides. Mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge. Finished with herringbone trim and a zigzag-style back strip, and fitted with waffleback-style tuners (GP-5N). Despite being a 000-28 type, it stands out with a rounder headstock and a Guild-style pickguard.
The X-bracing is the non-scalloped style typical of early models, and combined with the thicker top, gives it a bright voice. It may lack the delicacy of a scalloped brace, but the build quality feels very solid, and strumming hard brings out a powerful projection. The neck grip is a moderately thick soft-V profile with a solid, confident feel in hand.
Play it once and you'll notice touches that carry through to modern Headways, while still delivering the texture of an old guitar in full.
