It remains one of the most unconventional yet fervently loved instruments in Gibson's acoustic history.

Stage-dominating looks: an oversized double tortoise-pattern pickguard covering most of the top and star inlays gleaming on the fingerboard make for an unforgettable, iconic rock-and-roll design.

Calculated rhythm tone: the massive pickguard sitting atop the 16-inch maple body of this J-185-sized guitar deliberately suppresses excess top vibration, producing that distinctive, sharply percussive cutting sound with short sustain.

The character of a genuine 1968: the narrow neck typical of the late '60s combined with an adjustable saddle delivers an even tighter, sharper attack. Weather-checking built up over more than half a century radiates a presence only a real vintage instrument can carry.

Due to its oversized pickguard, this model is prone to top damage, but this 1968 example is a rare surviving instrument that has retained excellent playability. Production numbers were low, and genuinely playable vintage examples rarely come to market.

- Patch reinforcement repair at the lower center of the body top, separate from the standard crack stopper.
- Crack repair at the upper left and right of the soundhole.
- Crack repair at the lower left of the soundhole.
- Crack repair at the lower left of the soundhole (along the pickguard).
- Reinforcement inside the body under the fingerboard (around frets 16-18).
- Strap pin added at the neck heel.
- Signs of a strap pin having been added and later removed at the neck heel (hole filled and repaired).
- Body sides have been refinished.
- Neck has overlacquer applied throughout.
- Signs of a neck reset are visible.
- Crack repair/glue at the right side of the body back center.
- Touch-up work under the pickguard (waist area, treble side).
- The body-end strap hole has been enlarged, suggesting a pickup jack was once installed there.
