Lucas / 2000 LD-28
Made in 2000 by Randy Lucas at the peak of his career as a luthier, this is the "Lucas LD-28." Based in Columbus, Indiana, and with a background in mechanical engineering, Lucas studied the pre-war 1930s Martin designs down to the millimeter.
Behind the extraordinary praise for having "a truly authentic voice" lies his exceptional engineering perspective and an almost obsessive dedication to tonewood. In fact, having effectively stopped building guitars under his own name, he is now renowned as one of America's premier private suppliers of Adirondack spruce, providing wood to some of the country's top luthiers as a true wood specialist.
This particular LD-28 is a dream combination: a top of Adirondack spruce he had set aside for his own brand, paired with breathtakingly beautiful, top-grade Brazilian rosewood for the back and sides.
His engineering-driven approach to selecting each individual piece of wood, combined with a perfectly voiced Adirondack top, gives every note extraordinary sustain and explosive projection. The strings' vibration, fully settled in after all these years, resonates through the entire body as effortlessly as a speaker the moment you start playing. Strum a chord and the Brazilian rosewood's distinctively tight, deep, clear low end rumbles through the room; pick a note and the silky, sensuous treble decays with stunning beauty.
