Martin / 2002 000-28EC — "The signature guitar behind Eric Clapton"

Eric Clapton, often ranked among the three greatest guitarists in the world, wrote classics like "Tears in Heaven" and "Change the World." Released in 1996, the Martin 000-28EC has been an indispensable partner and trademark instrument throughout his performances and tours. Fans both in Japan and abroad have long been drawn to this model, and many have dreamed of playing one of his signature songs on a genuine 000-28EC.

The 000-size spruce-top body features an amber-toned finish reminiscent of a vintage instrument. Beyond the finish, it features white body binding and herringbone trim, and the rosette also uses herringbone purfling — details that suggest a design inspired by the 1930s-40s 000-28.

A tortoiseshell-pattern pickguard further enhances the authentic vintage look.

The back and sides use quartersawn Indian rosewood, with a zigzag back strip pattern.

The ebony fingerboard features diamond-and-square inlays that recall 1930s-40s models, and the 20th fret carries Eric Clapton's signature inlay.

The bridge is also ebony, fitted with a short saddle — likely influenced by the short-saddle setup on his first 1966 000-28 (a Mike Longworth custom) and his 1974 000-28, which he has played since around 1976.

The standout feature is arguably the mahogany neck, carved in a slightly thicker V-shape — a defining element of his playing style. A strap pin has been added at the neck heel.

The rosewood-veneered headstock carries a classic Martin logo decal, with a squared-off headstock shape reminiscent of 1930s-40s designs.

Open-back tuning machines stamped with the Martin logo, fitted with butterbean buttons, complete the authentic vintage look.

The endpin hole has been enlarged — roughly 13mm versus the standard ~7.5mm — suggesting a pickup was previously installed, making this a great option for anyone wanting to fit a new pickup.
