S.Yairi / 1970s YD-304 — A highly regarded 1970s domestic acoustic guitar, still popular among fans today, from S.Yairi, built with top-grade Brazilian rosewood back and sides.
The top is solid spruce. Amber-toned aging and checking give it a vintage-Martin-like presence. The play wear it carries is not a flaw but a mark of the history the instrument has lived through.
The back is a 3-piece laminate of Brazilian rosewood and maple — a luxurious combination by today's standards. The sides are also laminated Brazilian rosewood, matching the back.
The YD-304 is known for having been used by Yosui Inoue in live performances early in his career, and remains a source of admiration for many players to this day.
Unlike Martins of the same era, which used adjustable truss rods, the neck here uses a fixed steel truss rod — a somewhat thicker, rounded shape similar to Martins of the period. Built by Japanese craftsmen following this time-honored construction approach, it delivers a characteristically tight, hard Japanese tone, with the sturdy neck contributing to a firm low end and bright highs.
The attack has a dry, crisp quality, and strumming with a softer pick produces a warm, understated tone.
