Gibson / 1958 J-45

Based on its Factory Order Number (FON), this unit dates to 1958. The crack repair strip on the back interior of the body is stamped "J-45 ADJ BRIDGE," confirming the adjustable bridge spec.

The adjustable bridge option was added starting in 1956. Early examples had a distinctive style with large dial knobs on either side of the bridge for action adjustment (also used on the J-160E). This was soon replaced by an aluminum-based adjustable bridge. Then, in the late 1950s, the look changed again to a combination of a pure white ceramic saddle and large screws.

1958 was the first year that adjustable-bridge units outnumbered straight-saddle units in shipping volume, showing how the standard J-45 spec was shifting at the time. A mechanism that allowed action adjustment without filing the saddle must have been innovative for its era. Along with the invention of the adjustable truss rod, Gibson has periodically created historically significant innovations like this. Considering that it affected not just adjustability but the sound itself — connected to the tones behind songs by Donovan and Takuro Yoshida — it's genuinely moving to think about. Because this particular unit uses replacement parts, it now carries 1960s-era specs.

Another distinctive feature of this unit is its finish. The sunburst on the body top has faded and aged into something close to a honey sunburst — a finish trait typically seen around 1960.

That said, this doesn't quite match the FON dating — and the key to that discrepancy is a "2" stamp on the back of the headstock. This indicates a "second" — a unit stamped as such due to a cosmetic flaw at the factory.

Another notable point is the neck shape. Around 1958, necks tended to be thicker, but this unit has a comparatively slim neck shape. For reference:

From this, it seems likely that the guitar was originally built in 1958, but for some reason underwent a neck and finish reset around 1960. However, the back of the body still retains a reddish tint, which is characteristic of the cherry sunburst finish used from 1961 onward — a genuinely puzzling detail. There's a lot to speculate about, which makes this a fascinating instrument.

There are no issues using it as a vintage guitar. If anything, being able to enjoy an instrument along with a story like this one is an advantage in its own right.
