Headway 2001 HD-250, built by Yasuo Momose himself in 2001, shortly after the Headway workshop restarted - clearly made in answer to the question of what the finest guitar under the Headway name should be.
The Mexican abalone inlay around the body shows that intent at a glance: not uniform white shell, but deep, jade-tinged shimmer, each piece selected, cut, and fitted while checking its color and reflection. The vertical "Headway" headstock logo evokes Martin's top models and signals this model's special status; vertical logos now appear on Headway's upper models, but this model was the first.
Hexagon inlays on the ebony fingerboard and a long-saddle bridge recall 1930s-40s 45-style details, yet it is not a copy of the past. The internal construction - aluminum-channel truss rod, number of cleats, and X-brace placement - differs from the 1980s-90s Martin D-45s in our shop. It is not a reissue, but what master builder Yasuo Momose considered the finest Headway.
As for the sound: some players find Japanese acoustics somewhat stiff, but this HD-250 overturns that preconception from the first strum. Deep rosewood lows and sparkling highs without harshness; chords seem to expand the space around you rather than simply project forward. One culmination of Momose's work at the revived Headway.

[Condition]
A rare 45-style instrument, one of only 10 made to order in the early days of the revival, packed with Momose's design ideas. Over 20 years old but with no noticeable scratches; can fairly be called excellent condition. Some peeling of the case interior lining (see photos).
[Playing Condition]
Action at the 12th fret: 2.6mm low E side, 1.6mm high E side. Saddle protrusion approximately 2.5-3.0mm. No buzzing or choking; playing condition is good.
