Headway 2018 HD-450 Custom, built during the later years of master luthier Yasuo Momose, using Brazilian rosewood (Jacaranda) he had kept on hand for many years and carefully selected German spruce.
The concept is clear: the 1968 Martin D-45 — not the prewar legend, but the D-45 that was revived as the flagship after the war. Examples with Brazilian rosewood back and sides exist essentially only from 1968-69, just 229 units. Often discussed only for its rarity, that D-45 was in fact a top-tier instrument born with the values of a new era, built for real musical work.
Momose captures its features precisely: a thick black pickguard with chamfered edges, with the period-specific texture reproduced by finishing over it; a rounded '60s headstock with gold Grover milk-bottle tuners; and a torch inlay on the headplate that gives a dignified presence rather than flashiness. The construction follows suit: the small Brazilian rosewood bridge plate matches Martin's historical 1968 switch from maple to rosewood, and every design detail, including the X-brace intersection point, is consistent.
The sound is majestic from the first note. Without playing hard, notes rise on their own, layer, and linger in the air — almost evoking church bells. The sparkle of Brazilian rosewood and the open voice of German spruce come together as one resonance; this balance is the hallmark of Yasuo Momose.
