A 1964 Hofner 500/1 "McCartney Modified" has arrived
This original "Hofner 500/1"—a late-production 1964 model featuring small pickup rings and staple pickups—has been modified to match the specifications of the 1963 model favored by Paul McCartney
Although the headstock logo has been changed from a raised logo to a decal, the fingerboard has been modified to a non-binding style, and the tuners have been replaced with double-row tuners, the finish—with its unique color and texture characteristic of this era—remains original
Overall, it’s in excellent condition—even better than most other 500/1s from the same era!
Combined with the unique neck shape—found only on originals—that allows for a smooth, “sticky” feel when fingering, and the low string action, this is an instrument with outstanding playability.
The pickups, pots, and other assemblies are also original, and—as you’d expect from the original pickups—the sound is that classic “Fab Four” sound!
While original 1963 models command high prices due to their rarity, this vintage Mac’s Hofner is available at a reasonable, player-friendly price.
Pot date: “234” (1964)
