[Profile]
Nakade Sakazo was born in 1906 in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture, Japan. In 1919, he entered the workshop of master luthier Kanehachi Miyamoto, where he initially built bowed string instruments.
In 1929, when the legendary guitarist Andrés Segovia first visited Japan, Nakade was entrusted with making a copy of Segovia’s guitar. This experience led him to devote himself to classical guitar making. He established his own workshop in 1933 and continued building guitars despite repeated relocations during the Second World War.
During the classical guitar boom of the 1950s and 1960s, Nakade became, alongside Masaru Kohno, one of the central figures in Japanese classical guitar making.
His legacy was carried on by his three sons—Teruaki, Toshihiko, and Yukio Nakade—who each established their own workshops. He also trained many distinguished Japanese luthiers, including Hideo Ida, Seiji Inaba, Yoshimitsu Hoshino, Toshihiko Tanaka, and Hiromi Imai.
Nakade passed away in 1993 at the age of 87. Today, his instruments are highly regarded in the vintage market and are gaining increasing recognition internationally as representative examples of Japan’s finest vintage classical guitars.
[Instrument Information]
This is No. G, built in 1968, with a 650 mm scale length.
The guitar is characterized by its exceptionally quick attack and immediate response, allowing subtle playing nuances to be expressed with remarkable clarity. Its tone is relatively dark and warm, while offering impressive volume, excellent responsiveness, long sustain, and outstanding balance across the entire register. Built during Nakade Sakazo’s finest period, the instrument reflects his refined craftsmanship and deep understanding of acoustic design.
The guitar features a Cashew lacquer finish and Gotoh tuning machines. The neck has a slim profile and remains perfectly straight, with virtually no fret wear. String height is 2.7 mm on the first string and 3.7 mm on the sixth string, providing comfortable medium tension, a wide dynamic range, and excellent playability.
At approximately 56 years old, the guitar remains in good condition for its age. Two cracks on the lower side of the body have been professionally repaired and are structurally stable. There are also several noticeable dents on the soundboard, a large scratch near the neck heel, and two significant scratches on the back. These are cosmetic and do not affect the instrument’s structural integrity or playability. The finish is in fair overall condition.
A Super Light case is included.
