Brian Cohen

Brian Cohen, originally from South Africa, is a luthier based in Guildford, Surrey, England. He builds a wide range of stringed instruments, from early period instruments to modern classical and acoustic guitars.

He began making and repairing guitars independently in 1972. After repairing a David José Rubio guitar used by the Abreu brothers, he decided to pursue lutherie professionally and moved to England in 1974. There, he received guidance from Rubio and later became closely involved in his workshop, contributing to the construction of many instruments.

During the early music revival of the 1970s, Cohen studied and restored Renaissance and Baroque plucked instruments, incorporating their principles into his own work. He has also received recognition for his craftsmanship, including awards in both cello and guitar making competitions.

In 1990, he was commissioned by Julian Bream to build a copy of a Hermann Hauser I instrument, an experience that led him toward a more scientific and acoustically informed approach to lutherie.

Today, his work combines historical insight with refined craftsmanship, and he is regarded as one of the leading luthiers in the UK.

2012 Brian Cohen Acoustic Guitar (Used)

This 2012 acoustic guitar is inspired by the highly regarded Martin 000-42 Eric Clapton model. While based on this iconic design, it is not a strict replica but rather Cohen’s own interpretation.

Unlike the original Martin, this guitar features flamed maple back and sides and is finished in shellac. The rosette and head design are also Cohen’s original work. The internal structure follows a standard non-scalloped X-bracing pattern.

Tonally, the instrument differs from the typical bright and crisp Martin sound. Instead, it reflects Cohen’s classical sensibility, offering a softer, warmer, and more nuanced tone that makes full use of the shellac finish and maple construction.

This guitar was originally built by Cohen for use in a film production and was later retained by him before being sold directly to the previous owner, making it a one-owner instrument.

Condition is excellent, with only minor signs of use. There are no cracks or major repairs. The shellac finish shows slight unevenness in places, but this does not detract from its overall appearance.

The neck has a comfortable C-shape profile and includes a truss rod for precise adjustment. While inspired by Martin, the headstock design features softer contours. The guitar is fitted with Sperzel tuning machines.
