Norimitsu Tsutsumi (b. 1946) is a veteran Japanese luthier born in Toyama Prefecture. After studying guitar making for 13 years under Shoji Nobe beginning in 1968, he established his own workshop in 1980. Now based in Saitama, he continues to build both classical and acoustic guitars and remains one of Japan’s most experienced active makers.

His instruments are known for their solid craftsmanship and refined tonal character, reflecting the influence of Hermann Hauser with a clear, focused, and well-balanced sound.

Norimitsu Tsutsumi Model No.80, 2007 (Used)

A higher-grade model from Tsutsumi’s lineup, built with a 640 mm short scale for enhanced comfort and playability. Designed with smaller-handed players in mind, the guitar features a narrow 48 mm nut width, 40 mm string spacing at the nut, and 55 mm spacing at the saddle, creating a notably compact left-hand feel. The rounded D-shaped neck profile further contributes to comfortable playability.

The top is finished in French polish, while the back and sides are finished in cashew lacquer and made from high-quality Central/South American rosewood. Despite the short scale, the guitar produces a strong and full sound with excellent projection and no noticeable loss of power or depth.

The bracing design is influenced by the systems used by Manuel Velazquez during the 1970s–80s, itself rooted in certain Madrid-school concepts. However, Tsutsumi’s tonal approach leans more toward the focused and unified character associated with Hauser and Velazquez rather than a typically Spanish sound. The result is a clear and well-integrated voice with good depth, quick response, and balanced tonal warmth without excessive hardness.

There are repaired cracks on the back, including areas near the heel and lower bout, all professionally reinforced internally. The repairs have been carefully refinished and are visually unobtrusive. Aside from typical playing wear and minor scratches on the top, the overall condition is clean and well maintained. Neck condition and fret wear remain good.

String height is set at 2.8 mm (1st string) and 4.0 mm (6th string) at the 12th fret, with sufficient saddle height remaining. Fitted with Gotoh 35G510 tuners in matte plain-plate finish, functioning well. Includes a Cibeles hard case.
