Born in 1932 in Tokyo, Toshihiko Nakade is the second son of Nakade Sakazo (1906–1993), one of the leading figures in Japan’s classical guitar-making history alongside Masaru Kohno.

Under his father’s guidance, Toshihiko began making violins and guitars at the age of 16, turning exclusively to guitar making five years later. In 1960, he established his own workshop and began producing instruments under his own labels.

In 1968, he traveled to Spain and studied at the workshop of the renowned Madrid luthiers Hernández y Aguado. Their influence became fundamental to his guitar-making philosophy, reflected in his elegant designs, structural approach, and distinctive tonal character. At the same time, Toshihiko developed his own style, creating guitars known for powerful projection, rich tonal colors, and expressive voices.

He continued making guitars on a limited basis into his eighties and remains one of Japan’s most respected senior luthiers. Today, his instruments are increasingly appreciated by players and collectors worldwide for their refined craftsmanship and strong connection to the Spanish guitar tradition.

［Instrument Information］
This is a Master 50, built in 2019, with a 640 mm scale length.

The guitar has a rich, dark, and powerful tone, with impressive depth and resonance. Its sweet, singing upper register reflects the influence of traditional Spanish guitar making. Although the overall volume is moderate, it offers excellent responsiveness, beautiful sustain, and a well-balanced tonal structure.

The instrument represents the culmination of Toshihiko Nakade’s decades of experience and craftsmanship, with an expressive voice that responds sensitively to the player’s intentions.

It features a Cashew lacquer finish and Gotoh tuning machines. The neck has a comfortable medium profile and is perfectly straight, while the frets show virtually no wear. String height is 3.2 mm on the first string and 4.0 mm on the sixth string, providing slightly firm tension with a wide dynamic range and comfortable playability.

The guitar remains in excellent overall condition, with only minor signs of normal use, including fine playing marks on the soundboard and a small finish-wear area near the neck/body joint. These have no effect on playability.

There is no history of crack repairs, and the instrument remains in very good condition.
