Mariano Tezanos Castro (born in 1949) is an important figure in the Madrid school of guitar making. His father was Mariano Tezanos Martín (1915–1982), one of the most important master craftsmen in the workshop of José Ramírez III during the 1960s. Alongside Andrés Segovia and Narciso Yepes, who both favored José Ramírez guitars, and Paulino Bernabé, who served as foreman at the time, Mariano Tezanos Martín is regarded as one of the master makers whose work helped establish the worldwide reputation and prestige of the José Ramírez III workshop.

Mariano Tezanos Castro himself began working as an apprentice at the José Ramírez III workshop in 1963. He subsequently produced guitars energetically under the “MTC” stamp. After leaving the Ramírez workshop in 1984, he established the joint brand “Moreno y Castro” with Arturo Sanzano Moreno. The partnership, however, came to an end after several years. In 1992, he established another joint brand, “M. Tezanos Perez,” together with Teodoro Pérez.

The Tezanos Perez brand earned a strong reputation as an ideal collaboration between two makers who had fully refined their skills through years of experience at the José Ramírez workshop during its golden age. Their respective techniques and individual personalities were harmoniously combined, resulting in instruments that represented the finest traditions of the Madrid school. Producing approximately three high-quality guitars per month at a steady pace, the brand established itself as one of the leading names in the Madrid school from the 1990s through the 2000s.

This is a 2006 M. Tezanos Perez CONCIERTO No.31, with a 650 mm scale length.

The guitar is characterized by a bright, light, and graceful tonal quality, combining brightness with a soft and refined character. Its immediacy and responsiveness are particularly impressive, producing a lively and lightweight sound while retaining a satisfying sense of substance. The bass response is especially powerful and rich; even individual bass notes carry remarkable depth and projection, creating an almost wall-like presence of sound.

The overall volume is moderate, but the response is exceptionally good, with long, smooth sustain and excellent tonal balance across the instrument. Built in 2006, during the mature period of the Tezanos Perez brand, this CONCIERTO No.31 can be regarded as an outstanding example of the model, fully realizing the concept of combining the characteristic tonal qualities of the Madrid school with a modern structural approach developed through the collaboration of Mariano Tezanos Castro and Teodoro Pérez.

The guitar has a traditional French-polished Shellac finish and is fitted with Fustero tuning machines. The neck has a medium thickness and is straight, while the frets remain in good condition. The action is set very low, at approximately 2.0 mm on the 1st string and 3.0 mm on the 6th string. The relatively soft string tension and wide tolerance to the player's touch make the instrument exceptionally comfortable and easy to play.

Approximately 18 years have passed since the guitar was built, yet it remains in remarkably good condition, with only very limited signs of damage or wear. There is a shallow scratch on the lower portion of the soundboard and several small scratches on the treble-side neck joint area. Apart from these marks, the instrument is in exceptionally good condition.

The finish has been very well preserved, and the neck remains in good condition. There is no history of crack repairs or other structural repairs. The excellent condition of the instrument reflects the careful handling it has received over the years, and its structural integrity remains excellent.
