Masaru Kohno (1926–1998) was one of the most important pioneers of high-end classical guitar making in Japan. Born in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, he began building guitars independently after graduating from the Tokyo Higher School of Arts and Crafts in 1948.

Through continuous experimentation, Kohno developed highly original structural concepts, including the distinctive square-pattern bracing system that became a hallmark of his later instruments. A visit to Spain in 1960 further deepened his understanding of traditional Spanish guitar making through encounters with makers such as Ignacio Fleta and Arcángel Fernández.

International recognition came in 1967 when he won the Gold Medal at the Liège International Guitar Making Competition in Belgium. His workshop later evolved into the renowned Kohno/Sakurai atelier, continuing his legacy after his passing in 1998. Kohno guitars remain highly respected for their refined craftsmanship, excellent playability, and uniquely balanced tonal character.

A late-period example from one of Japan’s most influential guitar makers. Although built during the workshop era of the Kohno atelier, this entry-level Professional-R model clearly reflects Kohno’s design philosophy, combining refined playability with a warm and balanced tonal character that continues to attract dedicated players today.

The guitar features Kohno’s distinctive bracing concept, built around a parallel 7-bar structure reinforced by multiple transverse bars that create a characteristic square-pattern layout beneath the top. Structurally sophisticated yet visually elegant, the design reflects Kohno’s highly individual approach to soundboard control and tonal balance. Resonance is set approximately between F# and G.

Tonally, the instrument offers a smooth and immediate response with bright, polished trebles and excellent balance across the register. Notes connect naturally and fluidly, giving a particularly comfortable playing experience in both hands. Even as an entry-level model, it retains the clarity, responsiveness, and refined articulation characteristic of Kohno guitars.

The guitar shows honest signs of use throughout, including light playing wear, scratches, and small dents on the top, sides, and back. There are no major repairs, cracks, modifications, or refinishing. Neck condition remains good with only slight forward relief within normal setup range, and fret wear is minimal.

The neck has a slim, comfortable D-shaped profile with rounded edges. String height is set at 2.7 mm (1st string) and 3.7 mm (6th string) at the 12th fret, with approximately 0.5–1.0 mm of saddle remaining. String tension feels moderate to slightly soft, contributing to easy left-hand playability. Fitted with Gotoh 35G1600 tuners, functioning well. Hand-signed label by Masaru Kohno.
