〔Profile〕
Daisuke Kuriyama (b. 1981) began building guitars as a self-taught luthier while studying at Tokyo Zokei University. After graduating, he joined a major musical instrument retailer in 2003, where he spent more than ten years in the repair department. During this time, he had the opportunity to study numerous fine historical instruments from Japan and abroad, an experience that greatly refined his exceptional sense of tonal balance.

While working there, he was introduced to renowned Japanese luthier Kaoru Ono, and from 2010 received direct instruction in Ono’s workshop. After establishing his own workshop, Kuriyama has produced only six to eight guitars per year, each distinguished by meticulous craftsmanship and outstanding quality. Based on the traditional Spanish methods of Antonio de Torres, Domingo Esteso, and Marcelo Barbero I, his instruments faithfully capture the warmth, character, and resonance of the finest vintage Spanish guitars. Today, his guitars are highly regarded by musicians across a wide range of musical styles.

In 2020, both Kuriyama and his instruments were featured in Orfeo Magazine No.15, published by the French publisher Camino Verde.

〔Instrument Information〕
This 2019 No.64 by Daisuke Kuriyama is based on Hermann Hauser I’s 1929 model, rather than the famous 1937 “Segovia” model. Positioned between Hauser’s 1928 Llobet and 1931 pre-Segovia models, the 1929 instrument represents a fascinating period of exploration in his development. Kuriyama’s interpretation is a rare and highly respectful homage to this lesser-known masterpiece.

The large concentric rosette, Manuel Ramirez-inspired headstock, and elegant mother-of-pearl details give the guitar a distinctive yet refined appearance. Its sound combines the vivid resonance of the Spanish tradition with Hauser’s characteristic clarity and tonal coherence. Notes are beautifully articulated, with excellent response to changes in touch and plenty of expressive nuance.

The bracing of this particular instrument follows the 1937 design, as specified in the original custom order. It retains its original specifications and has no history of major repairs. Only minor playing marks are present.

With a comfortable D-shaped neck, 640 mm scale, and relatively low string height of 2.4 / 3.3 mm (1st / 6th string, 12th fret), it offers an exceptionally comfortable playing feel. Gotoh tuners are fitted.
