Born in Madrid in 1943. His father was Marcelo Barbero I (1904-1956), one of the most famous Spanish master craftsmen of the first half of the 20th century. When he was 13 years old, his father Barbero I passed away, and he was apprenticed in the workshop of Jose Ramirez III. Later, Arcangel Fernandez, an apprentice of Barbero I, opened his own workshop, and Barbero Hijo entered as an apprentice there in 1957.
The guitars that were shipped with the "Arcangel Fernandez Workshop" label were in fact completely handcrafted by Barbero Hijo himself, and were loved by core guitar fans as having a quality as high as that of his mentor Arcangel.
From the late 1990s, he also produced guitars under his own original label, and was showing increasing refinement and enrichment, until his untimely death in January 2005.
His slightly rigid tone evokes the best traditions of the Spanish guitar, which were passed down to his master, Arcangel, and even to his father, Barbero I. The more he approached the last years of his life, the more his reputation grew.

[Description]
Marcelo Barbero Hijo (Para Casa Arcangel Fernandez) has just arrived with a flamenco model Blanca (white) made in 1973. It is a relatively rare flamenco model from his early days as a craftsman in the workshop of Arcangel Fernandez. Even though it was made in his early years, the instruments construction, playability, acoustic function and expressiveness already show a skill and sense of style that surpass those of most craftsmen, even in Spain. The sound is rigid with sufficient resilience typical of this workshop, but it has the characteristics of Barbero Hijo, which is characterized by clarity and softness, rather than the harsh sound of his mentor Arcangel, which is filled with
contrasts of light and dark. The volume and response required for flamenco are also excellent, and the work has an imposing appearance typical of the Madrid School.
The sound board has several cracks repaired from under the bridge to the bottom (with patch reinforcement from the inside), and there is a 15cm crack repair on both sides of the neck heel (with patch reinforcement from the inside). There are also several cracks on the sides (5-10 cm in length) that have been repaired (glued only). The fingerboard may have been adjusted in the past, and the frets have been replaced. The back of the neck has been repainted in the past and is in good condition.
