Gibson / 1996 1964 J-160E

The 1964 J-160E is so famous for being used y John Lennon. The original is now a very rare 1960s Gibson flat-top that commands a premium price among 1960s Gibson flat-tops.

This new arrival is a 1996 reissue model.
The J-160E was revived around 1990 following the relocation of the Montana factory, but until 1995 it had a solid body top, X-bracing and other specifications.
In 1996, the specifications were changed to a laminated body top, ladder bracing, adjustable bridge, etc., making it more similar to the original 1964 model.
The body sides and top are laminated, while the body back is veneer, giving it a hard, crisp sound and deep bass.

The sound doesn't collapse or fall apart even when playing like cutting, so if you want to play a shaky acoustic guitar, this is the one you should get.
I chose 0.60mm picks for the sound and I thought it would be a good match for this guitar.

The frets have been refretted to match the original with wider frets and a much higher fret height than the original.
The pegs have been replaced with Goto Cruson-style 1-barrel pegs.
The saddle has also been replaced with a wooden frame with a resin saddle.

There are some paint cracks and other damage, but the neck, electrics and wood have been checked and adjusted by an acoustic guitar specialist and all parts are in good condition.
The neck has been straightened and tuned with no chatter or blockage, and the string height at the 12th fret is optimally set at 2.5 mm on the 6th string side and 2.0 mm on the 1st string side.

This piece seems to be an instrument whose appeal can only be felt by playing it.
Nowadays, the J-160E is almost never reissued as a new product, so it has a look and sound that is rarely encountered.
