This is an early third-generation model from the mid-1970s, during the transition from the "2nd/Ram's Head"!
This is an early third-generation model manufactured during the transition from the second-generation "Ram's Head." Early third-generation models from 1976 to early 1977 were nearly identical to the later Ram's Head models, featuring the EH3003 (board) model number, discrete circuitry, and an ON-OFF switch. The DC jack was a new feature. From late 1977 to around 1979, an op-amp IC was adopted in the circuit, and a TONE-BYPASS switch was installed instead of an ON-OFF switch. Model numbers included the EH-3003, which was inherited from the Ram's Head era, and the EH1322, unique to the third-generation model. Around 1980, it was replaced by the EH3034, which again used discrete circuitry. At the same time, the knob shape was changed from a chicken head type to a barrel type. The gritty, grainy distortion and crisp, long-lasting sustain are still present. The Tone control, characteristic of the Big Muff, features a peaky characteristic that dramatically changes the sound color from low boost to extreme treble boost. While it doesn't have a Tone-Bypass switch, even intermediate settings produce a rich, full-bodied sound without any hollowness. The intense yet powerful tone with a sense of depth and firmness is a hallmark of vintage Muffs.
