This is a Fuzz Face from the late 1960s to early 1970s equipped with the "BC183L" transistor!
The uniquely shaped Fuzz Face, introduced in late 1966, is a model whose sound varies greatly depending on the era and individual models are subject to significant individual variation. Initially using germanium "NKT275" transistors, the specifications were changed to the silicon "BC183L" in the late 1960s, followed by the "BC108" and other models (also confirmed to include the BC109 and BC183KA). It was available in several colors, and some models have shallow and some have deep housings. Following the merger of Arbiter and Dallas Music, known for the Rangemaster, in 1968, the company became known as "DALLAS-ARBITER ENGLAND." It was subsequently acquired by CBS in 1975.
This unit is believed to date from the late 1960s to early 1970s, when the company was known as "DALLAS-ARBITER ENGLAND" and transitioned from germanium to silicon transistors. Models equipped with the BC183L transistor are also famously favored by Eric Johnson.
As you turn up the FUZZ control, the sound changes from a crisp, thick boost/overdrive range to a sustained distortion/fuzz sound with added harmonics. The bright clean sound produced by turning down the guitar volume is truly exquisite. The NKT275 specification is said to be the best Marshall booster, but this pedal can be used in a wide range of situations to obtain a more aggressively driven sound. Compared to germanium transistors, which are easily affected by temperature and humidity, it also offers a stable sound with peace of mind. This product has anchor bolts (set screws) fixed to the housing, and a new method has been adopted where the lid is closed and secured with a nut, but this does not particularly affect operation.
