Samuel Kamaka Jr. made a series of these
unique instruments as a hobby in the 1940's from
cigar boxes he received from a cigar-smoking friend.The Samuel J. Davis "1886" cigar box is solid cedar, and also dates from the 1940's. It is still the favorite brand of cigar box for ukulele builders worldwide.
The condition is excellent, with a tiny bit of wear on the corners of the box, and a bit of fading of the wood and tarnishing of the hinges on the cigar box itself, but virtually no play wear. (The hinges on this box are steel, but on later boxes of this brand, the hinges were brass.)
All the parts are original, including the perfectly matched violin pegs, which appear to be rosewood or boxwood. /There are no chips or damage to the bridge slots or the nut slots. Currently strung with low-tension nylon D'Addario J-65 strings (similar to 1950's vintage Martin nylon strings. )
The tuners hold their tuning well, and the string height is low and easy to chord. It's quite a playable ukulele.
40.5 cm. "Ohta-san scale" long-neck concert. 15 fret joint, 17 frets total, so high chords are easy to reach.
All in all, a rare and beautifully preserved vintage instrument that's over 80 year old. It has been hanging on the wall of our shop's "ukulele museum" unplayed, with strings loosened, for about 12 years. It was our pride and joy, and it is bound to be the crown jewel of your ukulele collection!
